Come and Join Magpies Crusaders United (MCU) the recognised Football Queensland Pathway provider for the Mackay and Whitsunday Region. MCU are unique in regional Queensland as we are the Football Queensland licence holder for both the 9-12 year old development pathway through SAP and also the 13-16 year old pathway through an integrated full time talent support program modelled on the NPL youth structure in South East Queensland.

SAP stands for Skill Acquisition Phase. This is a critical age in the development of a player’s motor skills. Here MCU under the support of Football Queensland provides an extra level of coaching focused on this phase an additional two times a week. Therefore, a child in the MCU SAP program training week looks like the following: Mon – MCU SAP  Mid week – Local Club Training. Fri – MCU SAP. Weekend – Club Game. In addition to this MCU participates in the Football Queensland SAP festivals at least 3 times a year. In 2021 these festivals were in Brisbane, Townsville and Mackay. These festivals are where players from either FQ regional programs or SEQ SAP programs participate against each other to show their development and skills in a highly competitive environment.

The full time talent support model for males is where players transition into playing and training full time. Age groups play up divisions as teams to develop game understanding in a competitive environment. These age groups train 3 times per week and play the match on the weekend. These age groups also participate in the Football Queensland identification series which is supported by Football Australia. In 2021 there were two regional events in Townsville and a weeklong state event in Brisbane where these age groups participated against the best players from each region.

The part time talent support model for females is where MCU provides an additional two sessions per week to their current club training. As the female pathway for MCU is still very new we are long term looking to grow this to full time. However, until then a week of football for a youth female would look like the following: MCU Training x2, Club x 1 or 2 plus Club Game. These age groups also participate in the Football Queensland identification series which is supported by Football Australia. In 2021 there was a regional event in Townsville and two state events in Brisbane where these age groups participated against the best players from each region.
